POSITION GOAL
Under the direction of HSC management, the Sterile Processing Technician receives, reprocesses and distributes surgical instruments and equipment, maintains associated equipment and prepares for surgical procedures. Performs other unit functions appropriate to the position, and in compliance with HSC policies, procedures and protocols.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist surgery staff requests for surgical case carts, supplies, equipment and trays. Prioritize appropriately and deliver in a timely manner.
- Retrieve soiled equipment, decontaminate and prepare for re-issue.
- Accurately prepare instrument trays and packs, sterilize protects items and self by handling equipment properly to prevent damage and loss (follow PPE protocols).
- Demonstrate knowledge of care and cleaning of lumens.
- Prior to sterilization, complete component check of each instrument to verify completeness and proper function of each instrument.
- Identify that instrumentation coming from the washer decontaminator has been completely cleaned.
- Demonstrate the ability to reassemble any instrument disassembled for decontamination.
- Verify all instrument mechanisms are working smoothly. Prioritize and assemble standard and complex surgical instrumentation sets for the next day’s surgical schedule.
- Confirm that conditions for sterilization have been met.
- Document what type and number of items in each load, sterilization date, and equipment log.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance and terminal cleaning.
- Demonstrate responsibility for own competency, mandatory programs and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal date up to date.
- Participate in the orientation of new employees.

Supportive Responsibilities:
- Participate in the management of supplies for trays contain implants and sterile department supplies.
- Document any missing instruments on the outside of each instrument tray. Consult with RN Manager and Director.
- Work as a member of the total Surgical Services team to foster interdepartmental success.
- Actively participate in the Department’s housekeeping responsibilities and duties.
Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in a job-related field.
- May include a medically related field, disinfection/sterilization or experience with technical equipment involving multiple parts.
Preferred:
- One (1) year experience in disinfection/sterilization and utilizing technical sterilization equipment involving multiple parts within the medical field.
Education:
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
- Graduate from an approved Central Sterilization Technician Program.
Special Qualifications:
Required:
- Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) may be required.
- Understanding of sterilization techniques.
- Knowledge of different sterilization methods and equipment.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Preferred:
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential.
